"This is an acute location for the entire hospitality industry," says Henric Carlsson, hotel director Elite Plaza Hotel in Malmö.

Fewer guests are challenging the hotel industry

At Gustav Adolfs Torg, people tend to like this year, but today it is almost empty on the outdoor cafés. The square is surrounded by several hotels and the rooms are usually fully booked but so everyday does not look like nowadays.

"The bookings have fallen by almost 95 percent," says Henric Carlsson.

Events and conferences are also set on an ongoing basis and this will have long-term consequences. There are many in the industry who suffer from fewer guests booking into hotels.

Another hotel in Malmö that SVT has been in contact with tells us that their operations were planned to be doubled in May. It has now completely stopped and all within the staff have been short-term permits.

- We sincerely hope that it will be over soon, says Hanna Sundqvist, hotel director Moment Hotels.

Hotels are finding new ways

As a temporary solution to empty accommodation and meeting rooms, hotel chains around Sweden have been reorganized. SVT has been in contact with several hotels that have started renting their suites for a long time.

This is justified by the fact that there is already a housing shortage in the big cities and that there is a need that the hotel industry can fill. This opens up an entrance for income and more job opportunities for employees.

- It is a way to prevent more people from being notified. We want to take care of our staff, says Henric Carlsson.

Although more companies are going bankrupt, there is a great demand for temporary housing. Therefore, the hotels open up their rooms to more target groups.

- We receive care staff, students and the elderly. It is open to everyone, says Henric Carlsson.
