"The curve shows us that it seems that we are reaching a kind of plateau (the phase in which the peak remains stable for a certain period of time). Figures that indicate that the measures are working," the president announced Tuesday. from the Superior Institute of Health (ISS), Silvio Brusaferro , at the daily press conference on the coronavirus pandemic in Italy.

Brusaferro has warned, however, that the plateau has been reached, but that this does not mean that we must let our guard down regarding the confinement measures approved by Rome: "Even being at the top, we now have to manage the descent "

In the experts' forecasts, this is what was expected: a situation in which the daily number of new cases becomes constant or even decreasing. The data of the last days shows a positive trend in the decrease of the new positives -especially in Lombardy-, despite the high number of deaths per day (yesterday they were 812 in 24 hours, the same as in Spain).

Nationally, in a few days it went from a daily increase of 6,500 cases to around 4,000 (yesterday). The 'peak' of this March 31 was predicted by the 'big data' expert at the University of Insubria, Davide Tosi , in an article published earlier this month in which the expert had reached this conclusion by observing beforehand the progress of infections in Wuhan. According to forecasts, it is now easier to expect a "flattening" of the general curve of infected people and then begin a slow decline.

Reopening calendar

Thus, the Italians begin to set their sights on the end of the confinement. Giuseppe Conte's government already has a schedule to begin the return to normality in the country, which will last until May. Yesterday, Rome announced that it will maintain confinement until at least April 12. However, the experts' recommendation is clear: even when allowed to go outside again, citizens should keep a distance of at least one meter and wear a mask in public places. This, they warn, will still take weeks.

The Italian tricolor flag flies today at half-mast in all the official buildings of the country in tribute to those killed by coronaviruses -that number 11,591-, and to health workers who try to control the pandemic, especially in the north.
