The United States becomes the third most affected country behind Italy and Spain in terms of deaths from coronavirus. With 3,393 dead counted by a count of the Reuters agency, Tuesday March 31, they thus exceed the official balance sheet of China, which reports 3,305 dead.

9,000 more cases in New York

In New York, the number of coronavirus infections has increased by more than 9,000 in the past 24 hours. The total toll in what is one of the main centers of the pandemic in the United States now stands at 75,795, including 1,550 fatal cases, announced Tuesday the Governor of the State of New York, Andrew Cuomo.

"The virus is more powerful, more dangerous than we thought," said Andrew Cuomo in a daily press briefing. "We are still climbing the mountain, the great battle is at the top of this mountain," he added.

The death toll, which was 1,218 on Monday, increased 27% in 24 hours.

Italy has recorded 11,591 deaths and Spain 8,189. The new coronavirus has killed more than 40,000 people worldwide since its appearance in China last December.
