  • Faced with the shortage, the Lille hospital center (CHRU) launched its own production of surgical masks a week ago to combat the Covid-19 epidemic.
  • This mask in washable and reusable fabric, called Garridou®, will soon be able to be reproduced everywhere in France.
  • Tests have proven its effectiveness in filtering 3μm particles in both directions, therefore against the coronavirus.

An alternative solution against the shortage of FFP2 masks? For the past week, the Lille hospital center (CHRU), in collaboration with the northern textile manufacturer Lemahieu and the collective Le Souffle du Nord, has launched its own production of surgical masks to allow caregivers to safely fight against the coronavirus epidemic .

This mask in washable and reusable fabric, called Garridou®, will soon be able to be reproduced everywhere in France. "In view of the very large number of requests (...), the Lille CHRU decided to make its specifications available, without compensation," said the hospital on Monday in a press release.

3μm particle filtration efficiency

The objective is to allow all hospital and health personnel to benefit from this technical innovation which "continues to be evaluated and perfected in the light of user feedback", specifies the Lille University Hospital. Tests have proven the effectiveness of the mask in filtering 3μm particles in both directions, therefore against the coronavirus. "It does not replace single-use masks, but it is a complementary device," notes the CHRU.

"The initiative was not conceived as a commercial project," slips the hospital. This is why "the first condition posed for this sharing without compensation is the respect of a commitment to solidarity production". Clearly, the Garridou® must therefore be manufactured, distributed and made available at cost price "for public hospitals and health establishments engaged in the crisis".

The specifications are available, upon request, on the website www.des-masques-en-nord.fr. However, for health safety reasons, this mask cannot be made by individuals. "It is the combination validated by the Lille CHRU of a pattern and specific fabrics that guarantees its effectiveness," explains the press release.
