French morale is improving slightly in the midst of a coronavirus epidemic, according to a BVA study carried out for Europe 1 and Orange on Monday. But the vast majority of those polled remain as pessimistic as ever about the end of the crisis, while the confinement has been extended until at least April 15.

The weekend did (slightly) good for the French. The morale of our fellow citizens is improving a little compared to the previous days, according to a BVA study published Monday for Europe 1 and Orange. This small improvement remains fragile, however, since three quarters of those polled still believe that the worst of the coronavirus crisis remains before us. Women also say that they find it more difficult to live in confinement than men, especially from an economic point of view.

A slight improvement over previous days

French morale had reached its highest level on Sunday (5.9 out of 10) since the start of the BVA study. It improved by 0.2 points to reach Monday the score of 6.1 out of 10, returning to its level before the announcement of the extension of confinement until April 15. Other good news: the atmosphere in the home remains in good shape, with 74% satisfied.

However, three quarters of those polled (75%) think that the worst of the crisis is ahead of us, a stable proportion over the past few days.

Women less optimistic about the economic situation

The BVA study also highlights a significant difference in the perception of confinement between the sexes. If the morale of women is higher than that of men, they are much less optimistic about the financial situation of the home (47% against 58% of men). This difference can be explained "due to more precarious situations in certain cases" in women, writes BVA.
