Coronavirus: Containment begins in Moscow on Monday

Russia in turn is taking drastic measures to combat the coronavirus. In Moscow and its region, residents will have to remain confined to their homes. Until now, only people over the age of 65 have been affected by these containment measures.

Moscow became aware of the gravity of the situation belatedly and rather abruptly. The Russian capital has therefore decided to take fairly radical measures, with a containment regime which, on paper, is particularly strict.

Muscovites will only be allowed out of their homes to get to work, if necessary, for medical emergencies, and to do their shopping. They can also take out the trash, and walk their dog, but only within a radius of 100 meters. No possibility of walking or jogging as in other countries.

QR code for locating residents

These containment measures will be controlled by an " intelligent surveillance system, " said the press release from the Moscow city hall, without giving more details on this system. According to the press, it could be a QR code, a bar code which can be scanned on the phones of Muscovites, and which will allow the police to verify their place of residence. And to check any exemptions that will be issued by the local authorities.
