Employees of the Carrefour Vitrolles hypermarket in Bouches-du-Rhône exercised their right of withdrawal due to a lack of protection against the coronavirus. "At one point, we say stop," protested a union representative interviewed by Europe 1.

REPORT

Across France, employees in large and small distribution are on the front line facing the coronavirus pandemic. But in some brands, the lack of protection is causing great fear among staff. This is the case in Vitrolles, in the Boûches-du-Rhône, where the employees of a Carrefour hypermarket exercised their right of withdrawal on Monday morning.

"At some point we say stop, if we don't have masks we don't work anymore. We are a source of viruses", indignant the CGT representative of the store, Reda Longuar, interviewed by Europe 1.

"We have an employee in intensive care"

The employees of this Carrefour do not have masks, the stocks being reserved for caregivers. From the start, employees have come to work with their own masks, even if Plexiglas windows have been installed in front of the boxes. But the staff pointed to failures in the distribution of masks and hydroalcoholic gel. The result: suspicious cases have multiplied.

"The drop of water that made the vase overflow, these are 17 suspected cases and 7 proven cases. It goes very quickly, we have an employee in intensive care", protests the CGT representative of the store, Reda Longuar.

The trade unionist also believes that hygiene rules are not respected within the store. "We ask that the carts be disinfected every hour, at least once a day, which is not done. The Ministry of Labor recommends specific cleaning and disinfection with detergent, which is not not done in the rules of the art ", continues Reda Longuar.

Carrefour management replied that decontamination was carried out last Thursday. The CGT disputes this version and considers that this disinfection did not start until Monday. In addition, two million masks have been received and are currently being delivered to staff in all Carrefour stores and warehouses.
