An American baby died of a Covid-19 virus, in a very rare condition, Illinois officials said Saturday.

State Governor Guy B. Pritzker said at a press conference that the death of the "baby" was linked to deaths from the emerging Corona virus during the past 24 hours.

The state's public health department announced that the child, who died in Chicago, was less than a year old, and had a positive HIV test.

"Never has there ever been the death of an infant associated with Covid-19," administration head Ngozi Izikiki said in a statement.

She added that "a full investigation is being conducted to determine the cause of death."

"I know how difficult news like this is, especially regarding this very young child," said Pritzker, who was shocked by the news.

"It is especially sad for the family of this young child, and for the years that this baby was stolen. We should be sorry for that. ”

Multiple studies have found that the virus disproportionately affects the elderly and those with severe health problems.

The number of deaths from the new Corona virus in the United States exceeded two thousand on Saturday, while the number of infections rose to more than 120,000, according to a count by Johns Hopkins University.

Over 450 deaths were recorded in the United States over the course of 24 hours, and the baby in Chicago was among 13 new deaths in Illinois.
