"The situation in Africa is very worrying with a very very rapid evolution" in the number of countries affected by coronavirus on the continent, says Africa director of the World Health Organization (WHO), Matshidiso Moeti, in an interview to France 24 Friday March 27 from Brazzaville, Congo.

The number of officially detected cases in each country is also growing every day very quickly, she said. And now, "39 countries are affected" in Africa, and "about 300 cases" are officially detected every day, while two weeks ago, 50 cases were detected daily, she said.

While Matshidiso Moeti is delighted that "almost all countries" have now prohibited population regroupings and movements and that some 40 states have put in place containment measures - sometimes with border closures -, she underlines that the "Detection and quarantine of infected persons" are crucial measures to prevent the transmission of Covid-19.

"It is a great challenge" for African governments to fight this pandemic, and it requires "a lot of resources and international support", underlines Matshidiso Moeti, who also calls to "encourage the private sector" to pool financial resources , materials and equipment essential to the fight against the pandemic.
