Colombian Fernando Gaviria, positive for coronavirus since the end of February, was released from the hospital after a stay of four weeks.

Gaviria "is well and can go home," his UAE Emirates squad announced on Thursday evening about his star racer, one of the first athletes to contract Covid-19.

The day before, his Argentine teammate Maximilian Richeze had also been released from the hospital after a stay of equivalent duration.

Both were part of the small group of around half a dozen people (runners and team managers) diagnosed positive during the UAE Tour, the UAE Tour, the last two stages of which were scheduled February 28 and 29 were canceled.

According to several testimonies from participants in the UAE Tour, Gaviria was transported to hospital on February 29.

"I would like to say a big thank you to all those who supported me during my recovery period. I hope that this extraordinary period that we are all experiencing can soon end and that we can return to normalcy," commented Gaviria who , at 25, has 43 victories on his record, including two stages of the Tour de France and five of the Giro.
