  • Pandemic: United States exceeds 1,000 deaths from coronavirus

The United States has become the country with the most declared cases of coronavirus in the world. In total, 82,404, according to the Johns Hopkins University website that follows statistics around the world.

That country has carried out 519,338 tests, of which 15% have been positive, according to statistics compiled by two journalists from The Atlantic magazine in collaboration with the 'big data' company Related Sciences. In turn, 12.6% of positives require hospitalization . At 6:10 p.m. Washington time (11:10 p.m. Spanish time) the number of deaths totaled 1,178. For reference, it was barely 20 hours since the figure had crossed the 1,000 barrier. Mortality in the USA, in relation to the number of positives, is 1.43%, much lower than in Spain (7.37%), Italy (10.19%), France (5.75%) or China ( 4.02%). In fact, when it comes to deceased, the US is in fifth place, after those countries and Iran.

The most affected state by far is New York, where hospitals are improvising morgues and even using refrigerated trucks to store the bodies. As of today there have been 37,258 positives in that state, with 6,844 hospitalizations and 385 deaths. But the control of the pandemic varies greatly by state. In New York, for example, more than 122,000 tests have been carried out to detect the virus. In California, Texas and Florida, which has more population, just 67,000, 21,000, and 28,000, respectively, have been carried out. In relation to its population, the state in the worst situation is Louisiana, where there are 2,305 positives with 676 hospitalizations and 83 deaths.

The news comes the day last week's employment statistics were released. In total, 3,283,000 people applied for unemployment benefits, that is, 12 times the figure of the previous week. It is the highest number since statistics exist, and almost five times the previous record, of November 1982.
