According to two Italian newspapers, Pope Francis was tested negative for the coronavirus on Wednesday, after the discovery of a case of contamination of a prelate who has lived in the same residence for years.

According to the Messagero and the Fatto Quotidiano, all the people working in the Maison Sainte-Marthe, in particular the Pope's private secretaries, were tested at Covid-19. All tests were negative, the two newspapers said, referring to internal Vatican sources.

Pope celebrated morning mass

This information was not officially confirmed by the Vatican which had not commented on that on a first test of the pope, at the beginning of the month when Francis suffered from a cold with cough and had canceled commitments. The Pope, for his part, presided over his morning mass on Thursday in the small chapel of the residence. “In these days of so much suffering, there is so much fear. Fear for the elderly, who are alone, in retirement homes, or in hospitals, or in their homes, and do not know what can happen, "said the pope before his homily.

“The fear of unemployed workers who think of how to feed their children and see hunger coming. The fear of many people in the service of society who, today, contribute to sustaining society and can catch the disease. And also the fear - the fears - of each of us: everyone knows what is his. Let us pray to the Lord to help us trust, tolerate and overcome our fears, ”he added.

An “anti-contagion sanitary cordon” around the pope

After his election, the Argentine pope had shunned the isolation of the sumptuous apartments of the Apostolic Palace, preferring to stay more modestly in a 50 m2 of the Sainte-Marthe hotel residence, which also hosts prelates passing through Rome.

According to the Vatican Insider de La Stampa website, the pope has been surrounded for some time by an "anti-contagion sanitary cordon", which follows him wherever he goes. He no longer takes his meals in the common living room of the residence but in his apartment and those around him are permanently provided with disinfectants.
