The city mission normally has about 300 volunteers. Of those, between 60 and 70 percent are retirees and in the corona virus risk group and many have chosen to stay home to avoid being infected.

But now several people who have been laid off from their jobs move in and help. One of them is Annika Malmberg, who was recently granted a short-term leave from Volvo Penta.

- I was restless the first day. It feels weird to just go home when it's the way it is in the world, she says.

"It is wonderful that society can hold together"

Several of Gothenburg City Mission's visitors are in the corona virus risk group. To make it easier for them, the aid organization now runs out groceries that they deliver right to their doors.

Johanna Azar, Head of Unit at Gothenburg City Mission, is pleasantly surprised by the public's willingness to help.

- It is private individuals, but also congregations and companies that have heard of them. It is wonderful to see that society can hold together in crises like this one to help people who are more vulnerable than yourself, she says.
