In the municipality of Älvkarleby, two confirmed deaths have occurred after a coronas infection in an elderly home. They were cared for in the home of the elderly until the end, and protective equipment went on.

Protective equipment for personnel is important so that they are not themselves infected and also to reduce the risk of the infection spreading to more elderly people and staff.

In an e-mail to the county administrative board from the municipality last week, it was written: "Protective materials have a hard time where right now, Care in Älvkarleby is in great need of materials."

Therefore, large quantities of disposable items are in demand:

  • Mouthguard with visor 500 pcs
  • Aprons common. 15 000 pcs (30 cartons)
  • Glove M 40 000 pcs (20 cartons)
  • Glove L 40 000 pcs
  • Glove S 20 000 pcs (10 cartons)
  • Glove XL 18 000 pcs (10 cartons)
  • Long sleeve apron. 500

"Something is better than nothing," concludes the email from Älvkarleby.

In an interview with SVT this week, Lena Isokivelä, head of the care administration in Älvkarleby Municipality, says that at that time there were no coronas infected who were cared for at the time.

- It's not over yet on long roads. Fortunately, local companies donated some last week. What is most difficult to get today is mouth protection, masks, says Lena Isokivelä, head of care management for the care administration in Älvkarleby municipality.

What are the risks?

- When working with infections of this nature, you need to have goggles or visors and also some type of mask so that you do not become infected yourself - and also risk passing the infection on.

SVT has asked all municipalities in the county how they are doing with protective equipment. And most people state that there is a shortage.
