The coronavirus epidemic has killed 743 more people in Italy, bringing the death toll to 6,820, announced on Tuesday 24 March the director of civil protection. A figure that represents an increase compared to the 602 daily deaths announced on Monday.

The number of recorded cases now stands at 69,176, or 8.2% more than in the previous assessment, said Civil Protection.

In Lombardy, the most affected region of Italy, the situation is still as worrying with a total of 4,178 deaths and 30,703 cases.

In the United Kingdom, where containment of the population has just been put in place, the toll of the coronavirus pandemic stands at 422 dead, an unprecedented increase since the start of the crisis of 87 deaths in 24 hours , the British government announced on Tuesday.

The number of confirmed cases of contamination reached 8,077 against 6,650 on Monday.

544 deaths in the United States

In Switzerland, the coronavirus epidemic has so far killed 90 and contaminated more than 9,000 people, announced on Tuesday the federal public health office of the confederation, on the eve of a government meeting dedicated to a device emergency aid to businesses and the economy.

The number of cases increased by less than 1,000 in one day, slower than in previous days, fueling hopes of controlling the epidemic but we must be careful, said Patrick Mathys, head of the division Ministry of Health crisis management.

First death in Cameroon

In Cameroon, the first death of a patient with the new coronavirus was recorded on Tuesday, announced the Cameroonian Minister of Health, adding that the patient had arrived from Italy "already very affected by the disease".

The man was found positive for the virus on March 14, ten days after his return from Italy, and was then the third case of coronavirus in Cameroon.

According to the minister, the official count, which is affected by the limited capacities of laboratories, now amounts to 66 cases in this central African country, whose ports and agricultural regions serve as gateways and granaries to several of its neighbors, such as Chad and the Central African Republic.

In Africa, more than 2,000 cases have been officially declared, according to a count made by AFP on Tuesday around 5 p.m. GMT.

In France, the death toll rose to 1,100 dead and 22,300 confirmed cases.
