  • Coronavirus treatment and how to avoid contagion

Sick people sitting in chairs with their oxygen cylinders, side by side; infected with coronavirus lying on beds parked in hallways ; patients who wait with resignation for a doctor to attend them; coughs everywhere ... The situation in the emergency department at the Severo Ochoa Hospital in Leganés is dantesque, as can be seen in a video to which EL MUNDO has had access.

The emergencies of this hospital center are so collapsed that they have already begun to refer patients to other nearby hospitals with available beds.

The situation is repeated in the Príncipe de Asturias hospital, located in Alcalá, and in the Infanta Leonor, in Vallecas, which are also saturated.

In Leganés, the emergencies are "three times over their capacity" and "there are people without beds , sitting in plastic chairs for more than 30 hours," according to the complaint by the UGT union delegate from the hospital, Javier García. I have seen a person on the floor between two chairs. Psychically, this is terrible, "adds the also nurse.

"We need help, this is inhumane!" exclaims a doctor at Hospital 12 de Octubre, who does not want to reveal his identity. This doctor urgently requests the intervention of the Army in hospitals due to the inability to care for all the sick.

"I do not know if the authorities know what is happening in the hospitals. We have been behind for a long time . We are in a situation where demand exceeds resources and, therefore, I request the intervention of the military, who have experience in these issues ", he assures.

This doctor also wants to send a reassuring message and affirms that all coronavirus patients are being cared for. "It is not true that anyone is being left to die. There is no situation of chaos or lack of control, but this problem is beyond us. We do not have room for everyone," he laments.

Various health sources have assured EL MUNDO that it is a situation that will have to get used to. "In the coming days this will be the usual trend" in other hospital centers in the Community of Madrid, they added.

"790 beds"

The Community of Madrid has ensured that the ICUs of Madrid hospitals have not reached the limit of their capacity since the figure with which it closed yesterday is 790 beds and there are means to be "well above" 1,000.

This has been detailed in statements to the Cope Chain, the Community Health Minister, Enrique Ruiz Escudero, to emphasize that the hospital care chain, Emergencies, and ICU beds have adapted to the coronavirus pandemic.

According to their calculations, the ICU beds in the region are around 790, but there is a capacity to far exceed 1,000 , given that they were aware of the repercussion in critically ill patients due to the evolution of the disease in China and Italy, given the time hospitalization in these units is approximately 21 days.

In addition, Ruiz Escudero has revealed that 16 patients admitted to the ICU have already been discharged, a fact that allows "to begin to see the light of patients who come out ahead."

"There is still capacity in the ICU, for us it is disheartening, given that we have intensivists who are magnificent, to be said to be at the limit of capacity when it is not true," said Escudero, to emphasize that in the provisional hospital that If installed in Ifema, there will be 500 specific ICU beds if necessary.
