Contamination by the coronavirus has increased to 10,356 cases in New York , as the state tries to increase the capacity of hospitals to 75,000 beds and buy masks for service providers, Governor Andrew Cuomo reported Saturday.
Cuomo also announced that they will send a million masks to New York City, which with 6,211 concentrates the largest number of cases, while 500.00 will go to Long Island City, which accumulates more than 1,500 cases.
The rest, of the two million that have been identified, will be distributed throughout the state, which as of Friday reported 35 deaths from COVID-19.
"The medical community has told me that masks are a priority. We do not have masks to meet the needs of the state, " said Cuomo, who assured that they are "looking anywhere in the world" for the medical equipment they need to face the impact of the pandemic.
He warned that 54% of new infections are people between 18 and 49 years , who reiterated the need to follow the rules that have been imposed to prevent spread, such as maintaining a distance of two meters.
In the last hours, an increase of 1,803 new infections has been reported in the state.
He also indicated that four facilities that could be converted into hospitals to supply the demand for beds have been identified, including the Javits convention centers in Manhattan and Westchester County, and two university campuses, which Governor Cuomo will visit today with the body of Army engineers for evaluation.
New York seeks to increase the number of beds available to serve patients from 50,000 to 75,000. The new facilities, which would provide 250 beds each, will be administered by the Corps of Engineers.
" Everything that can be done is being done, " said the governor, who also reported that they are buying 6,000 fans to send them to places with the most critical cases.
According to the data provided by Cuomo, there are 1,603 people in hospitals by contagion, which represent 15% of cases.
It is estimated that if the virus continues to advance, the number of infected would be between 40 to 80 percent of the population , which in the case of New York State would mean between 7.8 million and 15.6 million people, according to Cuomo .
The New York authorities have also requested four field hospitals with 250 beds each, which will be in charge of the Corps of Engineers.
The governor's announcement comes after he stepped up measures on Friday to prevent further spread of the virus, a plan he has called "New York Paused," which will take effect tomorrow, Sunday.
The plan orders 75% of the workforce to stay home , prohibits rallies and forces people to stay within two meters of the street. Also that only essential companies or businesses are kept open.
The federal government declared New York, which reports about 50% of all cases in the US, in a state of emergency, which makes it easier to allocate funds.
