On Saturday, most of the 80 containers, filled with medical material, were to be shipped from the Defense Medical Center in Gothenburg to the military air base Erna in Uppsala.

This is the first time the Swedish Armed Forces has established a field hospital in a sharp position on Swedish soil.

- It is one of our tasks to support the community. We are prepared and we have been training for this, but not for any pandemic, but we are ready to provide the resources we have at our disposal, says Peter Fredriksson, Colonel and Director of the Defense Medical Center Gothenburg.

30 intensive care units

The first trucks started transporting at 13 o'clock. On Thursday, the field hospital will begin construction. It contains both laboratory and surgery department.

- It is a field hospital that should be able to have 30 intensive care units with operations and long-term sustainability, says Peter Fredriksson.

In two to three weeks, the hospital is expected to be operational and able to receive patients.

- I think this is perfectly appropriate to use the resources we have for the good of society. The situation is serious and then we need to be helped, says Peter Fredriksson, Colonel and Director of the Defense Medical Center Gothenburg.
