The military contingent on international missions is also affected by the coronavirus crisis. The Defense Ministry confirmed that half of the troops displaced to Iraq will return to Spain .

Currently, there are almost a thousand military displaced to Iraq, mainly at the Besmaya base, with the mission of training the new Iraqi army.

Almost half of this contingent will return to Spain shortly following the instructions of the Defense, under the orders that are being issued among the member countries of the international coalition of which Spain forms its troops.

The bulk of the troops participate in the Inheret Resolve mission, which includes an international mission of 70 countries led by the United States . Specifically, about 350 soldiers are at the Besmaya base. In addition, another 80 are at the Taji base along with five helicopters. Another 70 troops are in the Al Taqadum base and almost 50 in the headquarters based in Baghdad .

According to Defense, this decision is adopted to go in line with the new situation raised by Coronavirus with the steps of the rest of the countries of the coalition.

The withdrawal of part of the forces will fundamentally affect trainers, after the coalition has decided to reduce these tasks.

The rest of capacities are maintained. Defense clarifies that the measure is temporary and adopted only for prevention by Coronavirus
