Military personnel have already entered Catalonia , specifically Barcelona , as part of Operation Balmis to fight against the coronavirus .

Thus, in principle, the Ministry of Defense plans that in the next few hours, the Army will go to the port and airport of the Catalan capital to carry out disinfection tasks. It will be the first time that the military has touched civilian territory in this autonomous community, whose managers had been very critical of the arrival of military personnel, despite the fact that it involves participating in efforts to fight the coronavirus.

The Chief of the Defense Staff (Jemad), Miguel Ángel Villarroya , explained in an appearance before the media that the military deployment throughout Spain is similar in number of troops (2,622) to that of yesterday, but that expands to 59 new locations.

Navarra is also included on this occasion. The members of the Military Emergency Unit (UME) will go to the community capital, Pamplona, to clean up the facilities of the Government Delegation.

In the Basque Country there is no planned deployment, reducing the work to cleaning the Araca barracks in Vitoria, in case it is finally destined to place a military hospital, according to Jemad.

General Villarroya also explained that training is being carried out by the Civil Guard to units of the Army and the Air Force so that they can take over the nuclear power plants of Trillo (Guadalajara), Almaraz (Cáceres) and Cofrentes (Valencia). It will be the first time, in the framework of Operation Balmis, that the military take responsibility for nuclear power plants.

The Jemad also explained that the military are giving protection to convoys of food banks, as happens for example in Zaragoza.

For their part, the Police and the Civil Guard insisted that there are hardly any incidents. The number of arrests for disobeying the measures of the state of alarm is 60 in the last hours.

Likewise, those responsible for security warned that during the weekend citizens will not be able to make exit trips to other places and that, as the state of alarm advances, the police demand will be more forceful.
