The Amazon platform at Lauwin-Planque, in the North (Archives) - M.Libert / 20 Minutes

  • Protest movements were born in certain production sites in the North against the health risks linked to the coronavirus.
  • At La Redoute, around twenty employees refused to take up their post.
  • At Amazon, an employee is suspected of being affected by the Covid-19.

Workers worried about overcrowding at work. Several production plants in the North have experienced protests against the health risks associated with the coronavirus on Tuesday, including the Amazon sites in Lauwin-Planque and La Redoute in Wattrelos.

Some employees have thus tried to exercise their right of withdrawal by citing non-compliance with health rules, considering, moreover, that their activities "were not vital for society".

Refusal to work

"We request the cessation of these companies out of respect for the health of employees", notes the CGT union delegate at La Redoute where on the Wattrelos site, near Lille, around twenty employees refused to take up their post on Tuesday morning.

"Management has, of course, split the teams from 120 to 40, but the spaces are very limited and we have no masks," said the CGT, which denounces the fact that "the seat is completely closed and that the site workers must continue to rub shoulders with each other every day. "

"To limit the number of people on the site, only half of the staff are present in each team, alternately every other week, explains the management of La Redoute. Employees will therefore be on partial unemployment 50% of the time. We also introduced a four-hour delay between the end of the morning shift service and the start of the afternoon shift shift. "

About 300 withdrawal rights

Same tension at Amazon's logistics site in Lauwin-Planque, near Douai. "About 300 employees have exercised their right of withdrawal since Sunday because no measures have been put in place in health matters and they are 2,600 to work on this site", underlines the CGT.

The local union union met with the Douai sub-prefect on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the problem. Contacted by 20 Minutes , Amazon management ensures that they have implemented the necessary measures.

Especially since, according to our information, a case of Covid-19 is suspected in an employee who worked the night from Monday to Tuesday. “She went to her doctor who advised her to stay confined. She will know more in a week, ”said a source.

"It is totally irresponsible to let hundreds of people work in sites whose activity is not essential, but turnover comes before health", deplores the trade union Sud commerce which also denounces "l 'absence of sanitary measures taken in certain stores of the large distribution'.

"We had to take action sooner"

"Many cashiers in large retailers continue to work without protections," adds the local union CGT of Tourcoing. While the same kind of health dysfunction has been reported in several factories in the Lille metropolis.

"We had to take action sooner," denounces Sud commerce. The authorities are late. The workers do not have to pay for this lack of anticipation from the government. "
