In Grenoble, outgoing mayor Eric Piolle (EELV) comes out on top, with more than 26 points ahead of former mayor Alain Carignon (various right) - ISA HARSIN / SIPA

  • In Auvergne Rhône-Alpes, as elsewhere in France, outgoing mayors often came out on top Sunday, or even for some were re-elected in the first round.
  • From Grenoble to Clermont-Ferrand, via Saint-Etienne, Valence, Annecy, Chambéry, Bourg-en-Bresse and Roanne, focus on the results of the first round in the main cities of the region.

Is it the fear of the unknown and the need for stability in this anxiety-provoking period of spread of the coronavirus? Difficult to say but the observation is eloquent: with the notable exception of Lyon where Yann Cucherat (LREM), supported by the mayor Gérard Collomb, arrives only in 3rd position, far behind the ecologist Grégory Doucet, the big cities from Auvergne Rhône-Alpes saw the outgoing mayors fall sharply in the lead after this first round. And this, whatever their political color.

In the hypothesis, more and more uncertain, of a second round maintained next Sunday, we could thus witness a large wave of re-elections in the region. A quick overview of the results - all marked by strong abstention - in the main cities.

In Grenoble, Éric Piolle (EELV) comes out on top

It was one of the most anticipated results of this first round in the region. Favorite of the ballot, the outgoing environmental mayor Éric Piolle, supported by a broad red-green alliance going from EELV to La France Insoumise via the PCF, comes very much ahead in Grenoble with 46.67% of the votes, far ahead the returning and former mayor Alain Carignon (various right), who obtains only 19.80% of the votes. Behind, Emilie Chalas (LREM) and Olivier Noblecourt (PS) are in a pocket handkerchief with 13.75% and 13.31% respectively. If a quadrangular looms between these four candidates, Éric Piolle seems to have swept the competition from the first round and tackles a possible second round in an armchair.

In Clermont-Ferrand, Olivier Bianchi (PS) in very favorable waivers

Managed for more than half a century by the PS, Clermont-Ferrand should theoretically remain in the socialist purse for at least one additional mandate. Outgoing PS mayor Olivier Bianchi, at the head of a broad left-wing coalition, in fact totals 38.09% of the votes in the first round, with a substantial lead over his rivals. Behind him, three candidates are able to maintain themselves in the second round: Jean-Pierre Brenas (LR), supported by deputy MoDem Michel Fanget, with 20.74%, Eric Faidy, invested by LREM, with 15.54%, and finally the LFI candidate Marianne Maximi, who collected 12.32% of the vote.

In Saint-Etienne, Gaël Perdriau (LR) far ahead

Dual or triangular? In Saint-Etienne, outgoing mayor Gaël Perdriau (LR) widened the gap on his pursuers in the first round, with a score of 46.88%. It remains to be seen what the two other candidates who can maintain themselves in the second round will decide, Pierrick Courbon (PS) and Olivier Longeon (EELV), who respectively obtain 21.31% and 12.42% of the votes. The most likely would indeed be a rallying of the environmental candidate to the socialist, which would lead to a duel between Gaël Perdriau and Pierrick Courbon. The other notable point is the debacle of the former Greens striker Hervé Revelli, invested by LREM but let go by some walkers, and the candidate RN Sophie Robert, both below 10%.

In Valence, Nicolas Daragon (various right) re-elected in the first round

In Valence, a big victory for the outgoing LR mayor Nicolas Daragon, at the head of a diverse right list, re-elected in the first round with 59.45% of the votes. Follow two diverse lists on the left: that of Michel Quenin, supported in particular by LFI and EELV, with 17.71%, and the list of Florent Mejean, dubbed by the PS, with 8.96%. For the rest, big snub for the LREM candidate Alain Auger, who collects only a meager 6.89%, as well as for the RN Olivier Amos, which barely exceeds the 5% mark (5.57%).

In Annecy, Jean-Luc Rigaut (UDI, supported by LREM) followed by François Astorg (various left)

It is undoubtedly the big city of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes where the second round promises to be the tightest. In difficulty almost everywhere, LREM saves the furniture in Annecy where the presidential party supports the outgoing mayor Jean-Luc Rigaut (UDI). But the city councilor, who leads a coalition of the right and the center (LREM, LR, MoDem, Agir, Radical Party), only outstrips his opponents with a short head, with 28.39% of the vote. Jean-Luc Rigaut is thus closely followed by the various left list of François Astorg (27.87%), supported by the PS. A historic result for the left in a center-right city for decades. François Astorg could also register the rallying of Denis Duperthuy (various left), who barely crossed the 10% mark. And to further complicate matters, the dissident candidate Frédérique Lardet (various centers), who left LREM at the end of January for lack of nomination, can maintain herself in the second round with her score of 21.50%.

In Chambéry, Michel Dantin (various right) in the lead but an uncertain second round

Big favorite of the ballot, the outgoing mayor Michel Dantin (various right) arrives well at the head in Chambéry, with 37.38% of the votes. At first glance, his lead seems substantial over his two pursuers, the former Minister Thierry Repentin (various left) and Aurélie Le Meur (citizen list, supported by EELV). They stand shoulder to shoulder with 22.64% and 22.46% of the votes respectively. A triangular would probably be to his advantage. But the game of alliances and the possible discussions between the two lists on the left for the second round could well reshuffle the cards and threaten Michel Dantin.

In Bourg-en-Bresse, Jean-François Debat (PS) re-elected in an armchair

There will be no second round in Bourg-en-Bresse. As in 2008 and 2014, the outgoing socialist mayor Jean-François Debat was re-elected in the first round with 59.19% of the vote. A historic result for the town councilor, who becomes the first mayor of Bourg-en-Bresse elected three times consecutively. Behind him, the list led by the candidate LR Aurane Reihanian is credited with 20.62%, followed by Jérôme Buisson (RN), who gathers 8.74% of the votes. The LREM candidate Michaël Ruiz recorded a disappointing score of 7.42%.

In Roanne, Yves Nicolin (LR) re-elected in the first round

In Roanne, as elsewhere, the outgoing bonus has worked. Yves Nicolin (LR), who was running for a third mandate after those of 2001 and 2014, was thus largely re-elected in the first round by collecting 59.04% of the votes. He is more than 40 points ahead of the various left list led by Franck Beysson (17.61%), followed by the list of socialist Brigitte Dumoulin (17.42%). Note that the two candidates on the left are only 13 votes apart!
