• Direct Coronavirus, last minute

The message from the health authorities in the face of the coronavirus pandemic is insistent: stay home . The state of alarm, in addition, forces home confinement as a measure to stop the cure of contagion. But what about those who have no home? The social services, competence of the municipalities, are multiplying to offer an alternative to the homeless , take them off the streets, provide them with the recommended hygiene and remove them as far as possible from the risk of contagion of the disease.

In the city of Valencia, the NGOs had counted 788 homeless in October. Of them, half a hundred sleep every night on the street. The rest is done in one of the centers agreed by the City Council: Casa Caridad or the San Juan de Dios hostel . The management of this crisis, which is expected to worsen with the arrival of bad weather and rains this week, has led the Social Services of the Valencia City Council to rent rooms in hotels and hostels to offer them to these people, so that they can comply with the isolation conditions that are required, since the municipal shelter for climatic emergencies, managed by the Red Cross, does not meet the conditions to avoid contagions, as explained to EL MUNDO from the department led by Isabel Lozano. "If nobody can be on the street, neither can they," they say.

Some establishments have already offered to collaborate with the consistory in exchange for taking charge of the subsequent disinfection of the rooms to guarantee the hygiene required to stop infections.

The Urgent Attention Service (SAU) and the municipal police themselves will seek care for these people and deliver food , while care in the centers for the homeless is maintained, avoiding crowds.

Casa Caridad has also designed its contingency plan. The two shelters it manages are 100% complete and hygiene protocols have been used in them. The recommendation that has been made to users is that they do not leave the hostel.

The same goes for your dining room. Meals continue to be served in shifts and the minimum distance of one meter is met between diners. The biggest change as a result of this crisis is that the volunteers who regularly collaborate with the institution have been asked to stop doing these days and not go to the center. "The attention is only provided by the staff of Casa Caridad with the appropriate hygienic security measures," he points out from the Valencian NGO.

The food aid service to families without resources who have housing continues to be provided. They are given bags of non-perishable food, meat, fruit and vegetables .

Casa Caridad also has no problems with the supply of food and cleaning and hygiene products. "We have enough storage capacity in our facilities and the companies that collaborated with us on a regular basis continue to supply us without any problem," they explain from Casa Caridad.

The third leg of his comprehensive care has indeed been paralyzed. The nursery school has been closed since the Generalitat decreed the closure of educational centers for all stages indefinitely.
