  • In Montpellier, the mayor is threatened by a triangular which is not favorable to him.
  • In Perpignan, Louis Aliot would be worried only by a hypothetical republican front.
  • In Nîmes, the duel between Yvan Lachaud and Jean-Paul Fournier promises to be merciless. Unless it is the left that creates the surprise in the second round.

In Béziers (Hérault), the election in the first round of Robert Ménard (various right), with more than 68% of the vote, did not fall. But in the other big cities of Languedoc-Roussillon, the situation is uncertain. 20 Minutes takes stock of the forces present for the second round of municipal elections (if it takes place) in Montpellier (Hérault), Perpignan (Pyrénées-Orientales) and Nîmes (Gard), where everything is still possible.

Especially since in these three cities, abstention, which could be decisive in the second round of municipal elections, has broken records. In Nîmes, it borders on 68%. In Montpellier, more than 65% of those registered did not vote. And in Perpignan, just over 60%.

In Montpellier, the outgoing mayor is threatened

In Montpellier, the result of the first round is surprising in more ways than one. First, there is the performance of Michaël Delafosse (PS), who won 16.66% of the vote, much more than the polls predicted in recent weeks. And, perhaps mechanically, the ballot was marked by the surprisingly low score of Philippe Saurel (various left), who failed to pass the 20% mark, at 19.11%.

"For a first term, it is rare that the outgoing mayor lose as many points, says political scientist and professor emeritus of political science Paul Alliès, 20 Minutes . His first-round electorate six years ago has no doubt dispersed over others. "

Philippe Saurel, whom opinion polls have overestimated in recent months, is clearly threatened in the second round. Because under the bar of 10% remained on the sidelines some lists on the left which are not at all favorable to him, like those of the ecologists or Alenka Doulain. Even Rémi Gaillard. "If the second round takes place, in my opinion, on a triangular, he risks losing," continues Paul Alliès. Of the eleven lists that have been eliminated, there is a real reservoir of voices for Michaël Delafosse. For the most part, these were the lists which had criticized Philippe Saurel. "

Unless an alliance, despite the tensions of the past, with Mohed Altrad (various), who qualified with 13.30% of the vote? "It was not the path that Mohed Altrad was taking," continues the political scientist. I don't really see him standing behind Philippe Saurel like a good little soldier. So far, no alliance has been announced in Montpellier. But Michaël Delafosse announced that he was initiating "discussions in the spirit of bringing together environmentalists and citizen lists".

In Perpignan, Louis Aliot acts as favorite

In Perpignan, on the other hand, the results of the first round did not surprise anyone, Sunday evening: Louis Aliot (RN) rose widely in the lead, with 35.65% of the vote. The outgoing mayor, Jean-Marc Pujol (LR), faced with a strong division on the right, arrives far behind, with 18.43%. Agnès Langevine (EELV), at 14.51%, and Romain Grau (LREM), at 13.17%, are also qualified. Are we headed, in Perpignan, towards a Ménard-style scenario, where the RN takes a big city in the face and with the beard of all the opposition?

“Louis Aliot has taken a step ahead, says Paul Alliès. A Republican front, if it takes place, I don't know if it can work against it. The scores of the so-called "Republican" candidates remain fairly low. And a coalition of the three candidates is needed. I am quite skeptical. "For the moment, no candidate has mentioned a specific strategy. But rather than a Republican front, Jean-Marc Pujol pleaded, in the Independent, for a "republican withdrawal". "The Perpignan people trusted me despite the divisions, they put me at the head of the primary of the right and center," says the outgoing mayor.

In Nîmes, the second round will be fratricide

It is undoubtedly in Nîmes that the ballot is the most uncertain. Behind the outgoing mayor Jean-Paul Fournier (LR), who came in first with 34.34%, qualified his former ally Yvan Lachaud (LREM), at 15.73%, Vincent Bouget (various left), at 15.68 %, Yoann Gillet (RN), at 14.34% and Daniel Richard (left union), at 12.19%.

In the capital of Gard, everything is still possible, depending on possible withdrawals. Or alliances. Especially the one on the left. Yvan Lachaud, determined to "beat Jean-Paul Fournier" with whom he seems irreconcilable, reached out first, Sunday evening. "We will reflect how we will present ourselves in this second round (...), we will reflect, with those who want a page to turn in this city, said Yvan Lachaud, Sunday evening. If there are some who want to think about it, why not. " Who ? "I have no idea," says candidate LREM.

Results of the first round of the municipal elections

With Vincent Bouget? The marriage between the centrist candidate, stamped LREM, and the departmental secretary of the PCF, seems impossible. Vincent Bouget has also eliminated the possibility, after the announcement of the results. "I call for the people of the left to come together to finally turn the page on Fournier and Lachaud," chanted the candidate, Sunday evening, before his activists. At Midi Libre, the communist candidate said on Monday that he had contacted Daniel Richard. "No answer yet," he says. Because in Nîmes, it may be the left that could create surprise, in the second round.
