March 16, 2020 Following the request received yesterday evening by the Sicily Region, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Paola De Micheli, signed the decree which provides for the "suspension of connections and ordinary transport of people to and from Sicily" to deal with the coronavirus emergency. The Mit announced it in a note, explaining that freight transport is instead regular. People can travel by sea on the Strait only "for proven work, health or necessity needs".

"The closure of the territorial borders of Sicily, with the stop to connections for people, is a necessary condition to prevent contagions from Covid-19. We can only appreciate the decision of Minister De Micheli, also because we have urged it more times". So the Councilor for Transport of the Sicilian Region, comments with the decree signed overnight by Minister Paola DeMicheli. "For some time and on several occasions, President Musumeci had asked for the adoption of this measure, and had been criticized - adds Falcone - Now the decree has arrived, it is an invariable intervention to stop any possible transmission of the virus".
