List mergers should be expected at the start of the week. In Biarritz, six of the seven municipal candidates in the running are in the second round. Maider Arosteguy, candidate LR came out on top of this first round, this Sunday, with 31.46% of the vote. She is followed by the ecologist Guillaume Barucq (16%), the UDI Nathalie Motsch (14.24), Brice Morin (12.34), Michel Veunac (12.22) and Jean-Benoît Saint-Cricq (10 , 89). Only Karim Guerdane (2.93) is eliminated from the race for mayor of Biarritz.

The outgoing mayor Michel Veunac (member of the Modem supported by LREM), elected at the head of the city in 2014, is therefore the big loser of this poll. It comes in fifth position, with 12.22% of the vote. These six candidates have exceeded 10% and are in a position to reach the second round. It remains to be seen whether some intend to withdraw and enter into alliances.

Minister Didier Guillaume had withdrawn his candidacy

Six other candidates were in the running in this first round. The Minister of Agriculture Didier Guillaume withdrew his candidacy after the intervention of the President, Emmanuel Macron. In mid-January, Edouard Philippe had declared that it was "not conceivable that two members of the government could be candidates against each other in the long term", in response to a question on the rivalry between Didier Guillaume and Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne for the town hall of Biarritz.

As a candidate, the Minister of Agriculture would indeed have opposed the list of Michel Veunac, 73, in which Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne, Secretary of State to the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, appears. The members of the Biarritz! List, orphans of Didier Guillaume, had subsequently decided to throw in the towel.
