Heavy quilts (quilts with stitched weights designed to improve sleep) have become an increasingly popular feature in Swedish beds lately. Increased use is also evident in the regions. In 2019, over 26,154 weightbeds were prescribed by the regions around Sweden, which can be compared with 14,140 in 2015. But Region Örebro was one of a total of four regions that did not prescribe a single blanket during the previous year.

"Missing evidence"

- There is no evidence and support in the research, we only prescribe things that we know have good effect. That is why we have chosen not to prescribe the blankets, says regional council Karin Sundin (S).

Several staff members we have talked to within the region want the opportunity to prescribe gravity, so that they have the opportunity to reduce prescription of medicines. What do you say about that?

- You can't replace something you don't think is good with something you don't know if it's good. More studies need to be done to show that gravity tire gives effect.

The state of research governs

17 out of 21 regions prescribe the quilts, do you think they make mistakes that prescribe the quilts?

- No, everyone can make their own judgments. There are many regions that think the blankets are good, but given the resources we have and the economic situation we are in, I don't think we should spend our resources on something that has so little evidence.

However, Karin Sundin adds that if the research situation changes, then the region may be willing to prescribe gravity.
