More than 20,000 Swedish citizens are normally located in Turkey at this time of year, although at present there is a great deal of uncertainty about the figure.

"We want to encourage them to contact their airline and investigate alternative routes," says Erik Karlsson, press communicator at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to the Swedish Embassy in Ankara, it will in some cases be possible to fly out passengers who are in the country directly to Sweden in the next few days.

The plan flies empty

Turkish airline Pegasus Airlines writes in a press release that it plans to continue flying to Sweden as usual, but that the plane that normally takes passengers back to Turkey will fly empty. It is added that only foreign nationals are allowed to fly from Turkey.

Turkish Airlines writes that it cancels all flights to and from Sweden and the other countries concerned, and adds that the person who booked a trip with the company may cancel it. On Saturday afternoon, SAS cannot respond if any departures are to be canceled, but announces that if this happens, the passengers will receive the money back.

Quarantine for 14 days

In addition to Sweden, the ban from flying to Turkey also includes Denmark, Norway, France, Germany, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands and Austria. Persons who have visited any of the countries during the past 14 days are not allowed to fly to Turkey, except for persons with Turkish citizenship or Turkish residence permit. However, they must quarantine for 14 days when they arrive.
