“Following the modifications introduced by the government on prison visits between detainees and their families, because of the coronavirus, protests by detainees are in progress in the penitentiary establishments of Naples Poggioreale (south), Modena (north), Frosinone (center) and Alexandria (north-west) ", explained the independent trade union organization of the prison police (Osapp).

Modena prison "completely destroyed"

In Modena, the particularly violent revolt caused at least one death among the detainees, according to the Italian association of prison visitors, Antigone, without specifying the circumstances of this death. "We have already warned about the increase in tensions in the prisons, and the fact that it could end in tragedy," the association said in a statement on the revolts of detainees.

In this prison, two security officers were injured and around 20 staff members had to leave the premises, according to the Ansa news agency. Prisoners have managed to barricade themselves and take up arms, according to Giovanni Bapttista Durante, general secretary of another union of supervisors, Sappe. According to his colleagues at the Modena detention center, with whom he was able to speak, the prison is "completely destroyed".

Drastic measures throughout Italy

In Frosinone prison (south of Rome), around 100 detainees barricaded themselves in one section of the establishment, and the police intervened to restore order. The prisoners have drawn up a list of demands, including the possibility of visits by their relatives, and are trying to negotiate with the management, the Agi news agency reported. At Torre del Gallo prison in Pavia (north), the detainees managed to take two prison police officers hostage, and to release dozens of other detainees, according to Italian media.

In the neighborhood of Poggioreale prison, in the outskirts of Naples, families also came to support the sling of the detainees in the street. These mutinies came after the announcement of drastic measures taken throughout Italy, and particularly in the north of the peninsula, intended to halt the progression of the coronavirus.
