08 March 2020A few hours after the draft of the decree declaring the "closure" of Lombardy and 11 other provinces, many rushed to board the trains leaving from Milan to southern Italy. Hundreds of people poured into Garibaldi station, where the last intercity left at 11.20 pm.

Travelers boarded the wagons even without a ticket, telling the controllers that they were willing to pay the fine in order to remain on board. The railway staff convinced some of the impossibility of the request because the higher number than allowed could have created safety problems, but in many cases it was not enough to make them give up.

The situation at the central station is different, where the security staff say that there have been some more travelers than in the last few days, but there were no queues or crowds. However, there are reports of many who, out of fear of being closed in Lombardy, left by car to the beach house or the mountain house or to reach families.
