It was only a matter of time, but Mick Mulvaney's days as chief of staff were numbered. Officially, he still occupied this position on an interim basis, even after 14 months in office. It is therefore another replacement to add to the list of ousted officials of the White House following the trial for the dismissal of Donald Trump.

The American president was furious with Mick Mulvaney who at a press conference admitted that Washington had frozen military aid to Ukraine for political reasons and at the request of Donald Trump.

Mick Mulvaney then tried to back off but without much success. Summoned by the House of Representatives to testify, he was never heard because the White House had opposed it.

Its replacement is therefore not a big surprise. Donald Trump announced it himself on Twitter. Mick Mulvaney becomes special envoy to Northern Ireland and the post of chief of staff goes to one of the President's closest allies in the House of Representatives, North Carolina Republican Mark Meadows. Aged 61, he had been one of the President's fierce defenders during his impeachment trial. He becomes the fourth chief of staff to the Trump presidency.

I am pleased to announce that Congressman Mark Meadows will become White House Chief of Staff. I have long known and worked with Mark, and the relationship is a very good one ....
