Last week SVT News was able to tell how the mouthguard sold out at the pharmacies. Respiratory protection with built-in filters, which are sold at, among other things, department stores, are sold out in many places.

According to the Public Health Authority, oral protection provides no protection against the corona virus, but the sales ads on Blocket and Tradera give a different picture.

At Tradera, there are currently more than 200 advertisements for oral and respiratory protection and at Blocket close to 50 advertisements. "Perfect in corona times", "Recommended by WHO against coronavirus", "Soon sold out worldwide", "Perfect for splashing against body fluids flying around" are some formulations used.

"Protection against body fluids flying around"

Prior to the corona eruption, ordinary mouthguards cost a few kronor each. The starting prices are many times ten times higher. Some larger packages of mouth and respiratory protection are for sale for thousands of kronor.

When SVT asks questions about the ads, both Tradera and Blocket say that their rules do not allow misleading wording that the mouthguards protect against the corona virus. Tradera has corrected some 40 ads in recent days and Blocket changed some 30 ads on Monday.

- We generally do not allow health claims for goods that are unfounded. This also applies to claims that are implied, says Daniel Mars, Customer Security Manager at Blocket.

Both companies say that they follow the advertising on an ongoing basis.

The price is adjusted by the market

The fact that starting prices are sometimes very high is a natural consequence of a reduction in supply in the ordinary market.

- There are always those who speculate on goods, a few years ago it was chocolate milk. But the market solves it for no one buying more expensive than they think it is worth, says Daniel Mars.
