The United Nations Office in Yemen said today, Monday, that the escalation of fighting in Al-Jawf Governorate resulted in the displacement of thousands of civilians in the northern province that borders the Saudi borders.

"According to initial reports, thousands of civilians have been displaced as a result of violent clashes in Al-Jouf over the past 24 hours," the office added, in a tweet on the social networking site Twitter.

The office called on the warring parties to respect their obligations under international humanitarian law to protect civilians.

Earlier today, the executive unit of the camps for the displaced people of the legitimate government said that the military escalation of the Houthis in Al-Jouf forced tens of thousands to flee to the Ma'rib Governorate (east of the country).

She added - in a press statement - that tens of thousands of displaced people face a tragic situation, after being forced by the military escalation in Al-Jawf Governorate to flee to the adjacent Marib.

She confirmed that about 25,000 displaced families from Al-Jawf Governorate were monitored within 24 hours, noting that the recent displacement is greater than their capabilities and the capacity of the local authority and society.

The unit launched a distress call for international organizations and agencies concerned with humanitarian work, in order to move urgently for their relief.

Yesterday, Sunday, the Ansar Allah Houthi group took control of the city of Al-Hazm, the capital of the governorate, after fierce battles with the government army forces.

The Houthis' control of Al-Hazam came after weeks of controlling large areas of the mountainous district of Naham, which is described as the eastern gate of the capital, Sanaa.

By controlling most of the governorate and its directorates, it will become the third Yemeni governorate adjacent to Saudi Arabia, controlled by Houthi forces after the provinces of Saada and Hajjah.
