Usually, the Chadian herd is taken on foot to neighboring countries to be sold there. But the war in neighboring countries, such as Nigeria and Libya, has led the authorities to invent a new operating model. On Saturday February 29, a slaughterhouse for exporting meat instead of livestock was inaugurated in Moundou, 500 km south of the capital, by President Idriss Déby.

Insecurity in Libya and Nigeria , two major buyers of Chad's livestock, has weighed on exports. To get around this situation, which has a negative impact on the livestock sector, the second source of resources for the Chadian economy, the authorities are pushing to no longer export live cattle , but rather carcasses.

In Moundou, I proceeded this morning to the inauguration of the industrial complex of the Logone slaughterhouses. This gigantic infrastructure is a reflection of my ambition to provide Chad with a modern and efficient industrial fabric. pic.twitter.com/5N8zDcg710

According to Colombe Nguelet, assistant coordinator of the animal industries development support project, the Moundou slaughterhouse is only the first in the sector's development plan. We have more than 100 million heads, all animals combined. Instead of going to sell our live cattle, we will now value our cattle ourselves for local consumption and for export. "

To compete, Chadian meat must be of high quality, said Ramadan Khachallah, one of the representatives of livestock players present at the inauguration of the slaughterhouse. For that, it is necessary to pass from intensive breeding to ranches, where the animals will be better fed and cared for. The Logone abattoir complex will generate around 2Ramadan Khachallah,000 direct jobs if it manages to run at full speed.
