The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, called on all the conflicting parties on Syrian soil to cease an immediate ceasefire in the northwest of the country.

Aboul Gheit warned - in a statement distributed by the university today - of the danger of escalating military confrontations resulting from regional and international interventions on the Syrian scene, which contributed to exacerbating the field situation and undermining the chances of a peaceful solution to the Syrian crisis, and the implications of this turbulent situation on the security and stability of Syria and then the region.

He said that the military escalation in northwestern Syria constituted a blatant example of violating international humanitarian law, and caused an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe by displacing more than a million displaced Syrians and continuing to target civilian facilities from schools and hospitals, stressing the importance of all parties' commitment to cease-fire decisions and agreements.

In this context, Aboul Gheit stressed the responsibility of the Security Council in establishing an immediate humanitarian truce and providing urgent assistance to more than three million Syrians, calling for launching serious negotiations under the auspices of the United Nations with the aim of activating the political track and pushing towards the implementation of the political process in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2254, stressing However, resorting to a military solution will only bring more destruction, displacement and bloodshed.
