With this decision, it is a page that is turning in the history of the politics of French Polynesia. The High Commission of the Republic in French Polynesia refused Friday to register the declaration of candidacy for the municipal elections of the list led by Gaston Flosse, deposited the day before.

Address problem

The rules for having the right to appear would indeed not have been respected. Gaston Flosse assures that he rents with his partner an apartment of 15 square meters within his political permanence, in Papeete. But the town hall considers that it cannot be his main accommodation, and had already refused his registration on the electoral lists at the time of his first request. A decision confirmed by the Court of Cassation on February 20.

"The French state has decided to eliminate Gaston Flosse from all political life," Gaston Flosse told Tahiti-Infos. He announced that he would file an appeal before the administrative court which will have three days to rule. A few hours earlier, he had challenged, before the electoral litigation judge, the second refusal of the town hall of Papeete to register him on the electoral lists. The decision will be made on Monday.

At 88, Gaston Flosse wants to face Michel Buillard, his former ally, mayor of Papeete for 25 years and new candidate. He tabled Thursday the union list he leads, grouping autonomists, separatists and candidates outside parties. Before being sentenced to several ineligibility sentences, he exercised numerous political mandates: senator, deputy, territorial councilor, mayor of Pirae and president of French Polynesia for more than twenty years. He was even secretary of state in the government of Jacques Chirac, of which he was close, between 1986 and 1988. It is the first time that he tries to run for mayor of Papeete.
