It was at the end of March last year that a person reported to the police that a friend of her had been charged with crime. The notifier stated the name and year of birth of the suspect and the police recorded that the person came from Linköping.

A man with his name and similar year of birth was then sought by the police. Later that day, prosecutors decided to arrest the man in his absence and that a house search be done in his home. Once on the scene, the police learned from neighbors that the man was not at home.

Went to the police himself

When the man later turned himself in to the police to hear why they were looking for him, the mistake was discovered. The man was told by the police about the arrest. When the man then said he was the wrong person, the police contacted the plaintiff, who told him that the suspect lived in Lidköping.

Put the arrest just over two hours

Just over two hours later, the prosecutor claimed the arrest of the man from Linköping when a man in Lidköping was identified as a suspect in the case.

The man from Linköping now receives SEK 1,000 in compensation from the Justice Chancellor. The police authority has approved a claim of SEK 5,000.
