Martine Vassal in February 2020 - Chamussy / Sipa

The tension is still going up a notch in Marseille, a few weeks before the first round of municipal elections. The candidate of the Republicans Martine Vassal announces in a press release to have seized the prefect of area and the prefect of police of Bouches-du-Rhône in order to ensure "a good progress of the poll". The president of the metropolis considers that "the deleterious atmosphere in which the campaign takes place [...] makes democratic exercise particularly difficult".

Martine Vassal's campaign teams fear "intimidation, threats or distribution of ballots" imposed "at the entrances to or around the polling stations". "We want to be safe from cheating or the return of old methods, which would not honor our democracy," they say in this press release. Concretely, Martine Vassal calls for "the mobilization of the police to secure the area around the offices" and "guarantee the security of transfers of electoral materials to the centralizing offices"
