It is proposed to supplement the list of requirements that diplomats must meet in order to be appointed ambassador or representative.

“A citizen who is an ambassador / representative or candidate for appointment to the post of ambassador / representative should have only Russian citizenship,” the text says.

According to explanatory materials, the initiative is due to the amendments to the Constitution under consideration.

Thus, the authors believe, the legislation will establish a uniform approach to the requirement for persons replacing a public position to have only Russian citizenship.

In January, Federation Council speaker Valentina Matvienko proposed expanding the list of people who are prohibited from having foreign citizenship or a residence permit in another country, to diplomats.
