The Welshman, who reached number 1 worldwide with 'Mercy', has broken her silence after 10 years withdrawn without the world knowing why.

In the spring of 2008 a song began to play everywhere. Amy Winehouse had turned the British 'soul' into the sensation of the moment and a very young Adele came to confirm it with her first album. Then Duffy arrived with 'Mercy' and reached number one worldwide. The disc that was included, 'Rockferry', managed to sell nine million copies. That girl from a tiny town in Wales had become a world star. And suddenly it vanished. Now it is known that everything was due to Duffy raped, drugged and kidnapped for a few days, as he has told on his Instagram profile.

Duffy released in 2010 a second album, 'Endlessly', which did not even reach the success of his debut. From there, his appearances were very sporadic : some appearance in a movie ('Legend', in 2015), a couple of songs and practically nothing else. There was talk of the pressure of fame, of the singer's rural origins ... and another voice took her place. Now, after a decade of silence, the Welshman wanted to explain what happened through a post on her Instagram account.

"You can't imagine how many times I thought about writing this," starts the text that accompanies a black and white photo of Duffy staring at the floor. "Many of you have wondered what happened to me, where I got in and why . A journalist contacted me, found a way to communicate with me and I told him all last summer. He was kind and I felt incredibly able to speak at last." .

"The truth is, and believe me that I am well and safe now, that I was raped, drugged and held captive for a few days . Of course I survived. Recovery took time. There is no smooth way of saying it. But I can say that in the last decade was thousands and thousands of days I promised to want to feel the sunlight in my heart again. Now the sun shines. "

Why didn't he decide to use his voice to express his pain? Duffy asks rhetorically. "I didn't want to show the world the sadness in my eyes. How can I sing from the heart if it's broken?" Duffy also announces that in the coming weeks an interview will appear in which he will talk about all this and invite his fans to send questions that he will try to answer.

He also asks for respect for his family at this complex time and asks for help from fans : "Please support me to make this a positive experience ."

The terrible irony is that 'Mercy' is an autobiographical song about "sexual freedom," as Duffy herself said at the time. "About not doing something that someone else wants you to do." In the chorus, Duffy sings: "I'm asking for mercy, / why don't you let me go?"

In an interview with the magazine 'Esquire' in 2013, Duffy spoke of his withdrawal from the foreground: "I took a step back. I thought: I will stop all this immediately ... Everything became so complex, so much responsibility . I was lulling to people to sleep, not directing NASA. Suddenly, it was a product, a company, a business woman. But, above all, what I wanted was to be a human. "
