Hotel H10 Costa Adeje Palace in southwestern Tenerife will be in quarantine for 14 days, local authorities say.

"We have decided to let the guests of the hotel remain isolated in the hotel where they are under active supervision," says local Health Minister Maria Teresa Cruz Oval.

No message from the hotel

Thomas Strandvik from Åland is at the hotel with his wife and two children. He says that already during Tuesday, via media, they read that the quarantine could last for two weeks. But during Wednesday afternoon, the guests had not yet received a message directly from the hotel.

- We asked the staff half an hour ago, but then they said that they depend on the results of test responses from two suspected cases of infection.

He says that the recommendations of the hotel staff are to stay in the room. But after all, guests are allowed to get out in the hotel area, if they wear a face mask. He estimates that around a hundred people made their way to the pool area on Wednesday afternoon.

- We are at the pool right now, most are in good spirits.

Food bags for the room

In addition to not allowing guests to leave the hotel, life goes on as usual, he says. The restaurants have been closed during the day, but guests receive food supplies directly to the room.

- Last night we got a bag of sandwiches, fruit and a small pasta salad. This morning we got a bag of breakfast. We hope for more food today than yesterday, says Thomas.

He says the message of another 14 days at the hotel feels tough. In addition, involuntary quarantine causes a lot of practical problems.

- The children are lagging behind in school and we are losing income because we miss work. It can be a pretty expensive party, Thomas says.

Italian man infected

The hotel was quarantined after an Italian man who lived there himself sought medical attention when he felt ill. When he was confirmed to be infected with coronavirus, the decision was made not to allow guests to leave or enter the hotel area.

On Wednesday, local authorities announced that the Italian man's company had been tested negative for the virus, Reuters writes.

About 1,000 people are present at the hotel, which includes both guests and staff.
