A Finnish family is stuck in a hotel in the Costa Adeje Palace, which has been quarantined in Tenerife.

Coronavirus infection was detected on an Italian citizen who was on holiday in the city of Adeje in the southwestern part of Tenerife. Now the entire Costa Adeje Palace has been quarantined.

The hotel has quarantined four TUI and 16 Aurinkomatkat-Suntours Finnish clients, some of whom cannot get to work in time.

Many of them are now wondering whether and how to compensate for lost earnings due to quarantine.

According to the Infectious Disease Act, an infectious daily subsistence allowance compensates for loss of earnings if the employee is ordered to be absent from quarantine or isolation in order to prevent the spread of the communicable disease. Thus, you can receive a daily allowance for communicable diseases even if you are not incapacitated yourself.

- The amount of the daily sickness allowance is equal to the salary for that period, says Milla Kaitola, Kela's Benefit Manager.

Is there an upper limit to the daily allowances for communicable diseases that you cannot pay more for?

- There is no upper limit. The daily allowance for infectious diseases compensates for the loss of earnings that can be verified, he says.

She recalls that in paid employment, the daily sickness allowance is determined by the employer.

What certificates are needed?

According to Milla Kaitola, Kela's pages provide more detailed instructions on how to apply for an infectious disease daily allowance.

Among other things, the site states that the employer must state to Kela the amount of loss of earnings that the employee would receive if he was at work.

If, despite an infectious disease, an employee is able to do part of his or her own work or something other than his or her own, Kela pays the infectious daily subsistence allowance to the extent that the employee suffers a loss of earnings.

If an employee receives the same salary for a job other than the one covered by the decision to be absent, he / she will not be entitled to an Sickness Allowance, as he will not suffer any loss of earnings.

An infectious disease daily allowance is granted for the entire period of absence from work, without a maximum period.

Payment will be made as long as the quarantine decision continues

In paid employment, the daily sickness allowance is determined by the employer. The amount of the daily sickness allowance is the same as the loss of earnings. If you do other work or only part of your own work, the Sickness Allowance will be paid to the extent that you have lost your earnings.

An entrepreneur's daily sickness allowance is based on YEL or MYEL annual earnings.

Infectious disease daily allowance is paid for as long as the decision to quarantine or isolation continues. Infectious disease allowance is taxed like sickness benefit.
