Today, the Swedish Transport Administration and the Swedish Transport Agency report preliminary emission figures for road traffic in 2019.

More electric cars

Road traffic was largely unchanged in 2019. However, the number of new electric-powered passenger cars doubled in 2019, compared with 2018. Overall, carbon dioxide emissions from road traffic decreased by two percent.

The average carbon dioxide emissions from a car were 20 grams per kilometer in 2019, a decrease of three grams per kilometer, compared to the previous year.

Still do not reach climate targets

In addition, the proportion of biofuels increased, which is due to the reduction obligation. It was introduced in 2018 and requires fuel manufacturers to incorporate biofuels into their products.

- It is gratifying that the cars became more efficient and that the proportion of biofuels increased, but perhaps above all that road traffic did not increase. Then it will be easier to increase the tempo and reach the goals. To reach the transport sector's climate target by 2030, a reduction of greenhouse gases is required by about eight per cent per year, says Sven Hunhammar, environmental director at the Swedish Transport Administration, in a press release.
