Free breakfasts have been tested in two Bordeaux schools since autumn 2019. - POUZET / SIPA

  • Launched this fall in two nursery schools, the free breakfasts concern around sixty children in Bordeaux.
  • The city reports that not all the food offered is consumed by schoolchildren.
  • It plans to adapt the system, piloted by National Education, by including new establishments and by offering nutrition awareness, in addition.

Since October, two priority nursery schools in the city of Bordeaux have been testing the free breakfast system launched by the government as part of its poverty plan. If the State considers that the results are good and renews the system, the results are mixed in the city scale

“We have four to five children regularly per class, or thirty children per establishment, reports Emmanuelle Cuny, deputy mayor in charge of education and collective catering in Bordeaux. We initially thought that the rusks were not pleasant and we replaced them with bread which is not better consumed ”. What is most appreciated by children is the fruit. It is the city officials who offer this breakfast to children, identified in advance in connection with the educational staff.

Planned adjustments

If the assistant rejoices that many Bordeaux schoolchildren do not arrive at school on an empty stomach, and that there is no “crying need”, she suggests possible adjustments. She mentions for example the possibility of including other establishments, such as the Menuts kindergarten in which allophone children are educated and where there is a strong social mix. She specifies that it is the academic management which chooses the beneficiary establishments and the extent of the scope of the system. It will certainly be necessary to wait for the end of the municipal elections to find out the government's decisions on the development of the plan.

“We are also experimenting with shared breakfasts bringing together teachers, parents and children and which deal with themes such as nutrition, screens, etc. underlines Emmanuelle Cuny. I think it is a good addition to the free breakfast system, which helps to combat the isolation of families. ”
