Iran has been shaken by demonstrations in the autumn, which has affected many Iranians' voting tendencies and confidence in the country's leadership.

"It has had a very negative impact on the desire to go and vote, I know people who do not want to vote because of what has happened," Matin Pouyandeh in Tehran told SVT's Middle East correspondent Stina Blomqvist before the election.

Another factor seems to be voters' disappointment at the small number of eligible candidates. The Iranian Guardian Council, which consists of scholars, has prevented more than 7,200 - mainly reform-oriented - politicians from running for office.

All 30 seats in the capital Tehran were won by conservative politicians, according to Iranian state television.
