The Turkish Interior Ministry announced the killing of eight people, including three children, and the injury of others in the eastern province of Wan, by an earthquake that struck the border region with Iran on Sunday morning.

Minister Suleiman Souilou said - at a press conference in the eastern state of Elazig - that the emergency teams have reached the area, and that search and rescue work and the inspection of damage are continuing in a number of villages.

For his part, Minister of Health Fakhruddin Kuja said - in a statement - that the earthquake injured 21 people in Van.

The Presidential Communications Service indicated that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has received information from the Minister of the Interior regarding the earthquake, the affected areas and search and rescue work.

On the other hand, the authorities in Iran announced that the earthquake injured 25 people, and caused material damage in 43 villages, without mentioning the presence of dead people.

According to the Al-Jazeera correspondent, according to the Iranian Geological Survey, the earthquake, measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale, occurred in the West Azerbaijan Province, northwest of Iran.

The epicenter was about 6 km deep in the Kotor region of West Azerbaijan.
