Gilles Simon (58th) qualified for the semi-finals of the Marseille tournament after his fairly clear victory on Friday over the world No. 5, the Russian Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-0.

The fears of the Russian, finalist of the last US Open and who had admitted the day before the match not to "like" playing against Gilles Simon, were therefore justified.

Simon, double winner of the Marseille event (2007, 2015), yet not necessarily in high profile since the start of the season with only two victories on the circuit before Marseille, put a little over an hour to offer his greatest victory in many months.

The Frenchman, who had neither reached the semi-finals of a circuit tournament nor beaten the top 10 since the Queen's tournament in London in June 2019 (Kevin Anderson), will face in the semi-finals the Belarusian Egor Gerasimov ( 72nd) or the Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime (18th).
