Technical works measure fallen snow, not snow depth, at a fixed location during the snow clearing season. The season extends from autumn to May.

In the fall of 2019, the first snow came very early, already last September. It is not unusual for it to snow so early, however, it is unusual for the snow to never melt away.

- The nearest record is 310 centimeters from the 1997-98 season, says Christer Roos, head of the street / leisure department at the Technical Works in Kiruna.

The price tag for 2020: 1.5 million

The cost of snow removal has fluctuated between SEK 8.5 to 12 million per year. The cost for 2020 is so far just over 1.5 million.

- It has been a lot of money but not unusually much, as everyone knows it has been snowing a lot during January and February.

So do the snowmen

There are Kirunabor who have complained about the snow clearing, both on roads and walkways. The technical works have directives from Kiruna Municipality to follow.

- When it has fallen five centimeters, we must snowflake priority roads such as the city center and bus lines. If it has fallen eight centimeters, it is residential neighborhoods and other areas. Then you have 15 hours to wear, says Christer Roos, head of the street / leisure department at the Technical Works in Kiruna.
