A thousand scientists from all disciplines signed a column in Le Monde on Friday calling for citizen mobilization. The sociological Milan Bouchet-Valat, signatory of the tribune, explains himself on Europe 1.

"If the leaders do not act enough for the climate, do it yourself, even give in to civil disobedience". This is the message from this forum published by Le Monde on Friday, and signed by 1,000 scientists from all disciplines. Civil disobedience is peacefully refusing to submit to the law. The sociologist Milan Bouchet-Valat, signatory, explained himself Friday morning on Europe 1.

Change mode of action

These scientists are committed on a personal basis. Faced with the inertia of public authorities, climate change or the loss of biodiversity, it is now necessary to change the mode of action. This is what Milan Bouchet-Valat explains.

"It really is an emergency cry," he assures the microphone of Europe 1. "But unlike the other forums that highlight the gravity of the situation, our forum calls for the mobilization of citizens, in particular by civil disobedience, since we judge that we can no longer simply stick to observations ", continues the scientist. "The principle of civil disobedience is to take actions that are a priori illegal but with an open face. We also do not call for violence. It is always non-violent movements", explains the signatory of the rostrum.

The sociologist calls for a collective mobilization of scientists. "I have already participated in different types of actions," he claims, "and I encourage colleagues to do the same. Scientists must also play their part in this mobilization," he concludes.
