Two hookah cafes were the targets of the 43-year-old perpetrator.

He shot at least nine people and injured others on Wednesday night.

- Thanks to testimony and surveillance cameras, a suspected perpetrator was quite quickly found. The car he used to escape the scene could be identified, Hessen's Prime Minister Peter Beuth said at a press conference.

After several hours of hunting, police found the car at the suspect's home.

- As security forces went through the home, they found two more dead people. His 72-year-old mother and the perpetrator. Both had gunshot injuries, says Peter Beuth.

"A sad memory"

Both the federal prosecutor and Peter Beuth say the shootings can have an xenophobic and right-wing motive.

- I condemn this act, it's an attack on our free society, says Peter Beuth.

Germany has been shaken by several right-wing attacks over the past year and many Hanaubs are shocked by the night's bloody deeds.

- You can't imagine a worse night. This, of course, will keep us busy for a long time to come and become a sad memory, says the city's mayor Claus Kaminsky to the German newspaper Bild.

Unknown by police

According to information in the German media, the perpetrator must have left both a letter and a video, which is now being investigated.

The suspect has not been known to police since before and a weapon was found next to his body.

There is no indication that there have been more perpetrators, according to police.
